Beware…phone scammers on the loose in Lake Worth

LAKE WORTH — Scammers never take a vacation.

On Tuesday, the city said it found out that phone scammers posing as city employees are targeting customers across Lake Worth’s service territory.

The scammers, the city said, are using false numbers that could appear on a caller ID to be from Lake Worth.

The con artists threaten to shut off power unless a payment is made immediately with a Green dot Money Pak card or a personal credit card.

The city wants everyone to know those calls aren’t from any city worker.

Lake Worth Utilities, the city said, will never call and demand credit card information or take Green Dot Money Pak cards as payment with the threat of disconnection. The city doesn’t ask for any personal information from customers.

If you get a call like this, the city suggests you  hand up and call Lake Worth Utilities at 561-533-7300.

The city said authorities have been notified of the scam. If you suspect you’ve been a victim, make a suspicious incident report with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office at 561-688-3400.
